Good solution,sew whatever. I have this pattern so was glad to see the review. For me I have a lot of hoops to jump through to stop gaping. My main things are lowering the bust, an fba, and putting the buttonhole at the bust in the right place. I don't know if any of those would help you with gaping but all have to happen on buttoned things. I may just cop out on this pattern and do the other view so thanks for sharing your experience with this one.

It does look good with that fabric. Sometime when front openings are needed, I still keep them for style. but I topstitch along the edge where the buttons are, basically stitch it closed so I don't get the gaping. That might work for you with this one.
