|Pattern Description: |
Skating dress with keyhole back and yokes at upper bodice and waist. Choice of short, circular skirt (freestyle) or two-piece dance skirt. The dress can be sleeveless, puffed-sleeved, or long-sleeved. The pattern includes a "sock-and-slipper look" skate-boot cover.
Girls' sizes 2-13 and women's sizes 4-14
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes. I sewed view B. The skater, my son's girlfriend, played the role of Sleeping Beauty, so the three colors for her costume approximately matched the peasant-style, vested dress Aurora wore in an early movie scene.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Very clear. Instructions with explanatory drawings are also available online at the pattern company's website. Helpful videos offer tips and suggestions for sewing with knits and elastic.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I liked that the cut fabric pieces matched perfectly, and shaped notches helped ensure correct placement. The down side is that all sizes are drawn in successive lines that radiate outward. Because I opted to trace the pattern, I used sheer tracing material obtained from Nancy's Notions. I also use a ruler called "The Curve Genie." I simply traced the correct size by placing the ruler's edge against the line for the size I needed. The ruler's curve matched the curves of the pattern, so it's easier to trace.
Rayon-spandex knits. Fabrics are supposed to have 70%, four-way stretch. The knit I used for this skirt had sufficient stretch in only one direction, but I cut the skirt in such a way to ensure that the stretchy side met the seam requiring stretch.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I shortened the back skirt about three inches for a petite skater.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes, I definitely would sew it again, and I highly recommend this pattern.
An easy-to-sew pattern. I chose the size based on the skater's measurements. I used size 10, and the fit was perfect. The only alteration was shortening of the back skirt. The pattern is versatile because different looks can be achieved with varied color choices and embellishments.
