|Pattern Description: |
From work to weekend, this dress has you covered! The Cambie Dress is a fitted, fully lined dress with a gorgeous sweetheart neckline and flattering built-in cap sleeves. Great when you want the coverage of a sleeve but the comfort of a sleeveless dress!
This dress is designed with a pear-shaped figure in mind. Cap sleeves draw attention to the shoulders, while the narrow waistband highlights the waist.
Your choice of classic A-line skirt or full gathered skirt. Both skirt options feature pockets for practicality! Sizing is proportioned for a pear-shaped figure: smaller bust and waist, larger hips.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Were the instructions easy to follow?
The instructions are very clear, even for a complete beginner. There is lots of information on the Sewaholic blog that even an inexperienced sewist can get through it. I have made the pattern three times, this version being the second time.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
This was actually the pattern that got me into dressmaking almost two years ago. I saw it on Pinterest and I was in love. I was encouraged by all the gorgeous versions seamstresses across the internet were putting out there and decided to give it a go!
Bird-print cotton voile. This is one of my favourite fabrics I've ever used and I am satisfied it really suits this pattern. I've made far worse fabric choices since starting to sew, so I think this dress is pretty impressive for a beginner sewist!
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
Because this was only my second attempt at garment sewing, I didn't make any alterations. If I make it again (and I hope I will - it's a wonderful pattern!) I would start with a different size and do a FBA. I think from memory I made a size 10 and it is quite big on me.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I made this dress almost two years ago but am only reviewing it now. I would love to sew this dress again, with fit alterations. Because the dress is designed for pear-shaped ladies (of which I am one), it is ideal for my figure, apart from the fact I need a pretty big FBA. The A-line skirt version is so very flattering. I love the full-skirted version, too.
This dress is great! The instructions are clear and there is so much information on the internet to get you through even the smallest of issues. The fit is flattering, and works with both plain and patterned fabrics. There is a reason there are so many bloggers raving about the Cambie dress. I will always know it as the dress that got me from lurking sewing blogs to learning the art of dressmaking myself, and that for me is pretty special!
