From the pattern envelope:
PATTERN 2257 MEN'S PAJAMA PANTS & SHORTS
DESIGNED FOR LIGHT TO MEDIUM WEIGHT WOVEN FABRICS
Suggested Fabrics: Cotton, cotton types, broadcloth, chambray, flannelette
Men's pull-on pajama pants and shorts have fly opening, elastic in casing at waist and drawstring. Fly has optional button closing.
The pattern is copyrighted 1993 (MCMXCIII Kwik Sew Style or Roman Numerals, as you prefer).
I want to establish a benchmark time on sewing these PJ bottoms.
These are the parameters for the test:
1) all machines are threaded before timing begins
2) pattern pieces are cut out but not marked
3) small scissors at each sewing/pressing 'station'
4) one machine set up exclusively for buttonhole sewing
5) practice PJ sewing allowed prior to time testing (I sewed 2 PJ bottoms in the days before the time test)
6) in the event of an error which requires use of seam ripper, the clock is stopped until error recovery (I didn't make a mistake this time)
7) faux flat felled seam on outseams
8) no closure on fly (if you use it on a future version, sew it outside of the time window)
9) casing for elastic as opposed to use of sports elastic
10)shoe string or premade drawstring
On the first version of this pattern, I noted it took just over 4 hours. I had Gigi Louis's 30-minute time for the shorts as she noted in the 1st review of this pattern. I knew I could not sew these in 30 minutes but I wanted to see how fast I could sew them.
S-M-L-XL-XXL, Kwik Sew's sizing standard for men.
Sizing ranges from 28-30 inches (71-76 cm) for S and 44-46 inches (111-116 cm) for XXL.
I used an M sized at the waist for 32-34 inches (81-86 cm).
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes. It's a fairly straightforward pattern, not too much to hide or get wrong in a pattern envelope illustration.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes. The only thing to be aware of is the topstitching in Step 4, paragraph 2. You have already topstitched the long vertical lines which outline the fly and also hold the faced (via folding) fly in place so all that is needed in the way of topstitching now is a small triangle section at the base of the fly.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
The pattern is well drafted (as usual for Kwik Sew) and everything goes together well.
100% quilting cotton from the Alien Invasion line by Amy Bradley for Moda. I think this design is called "Space Ships."
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I folded out some in leg length and also I removed about 1 inch from hip to hip in the front and back pattern pieces.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes and yes.
This is a good pattern for PJ bottoms for men.
My benchmark time for these PJ bottoms is now 1 hour 38 minutes, down from just over 4 hours when I first made them. I'm sure I'll never approach Gigi Louis's 30 minutes for the shorts--she's the first reviewer--but that's okay. I'm pretty happy with my new 'record.'
A future goal would be to sew these without using the instructions but sewing a fly still confuses me a bit so I'm not ready to 'fly blind.'
