Updated for second outfit. My youngest daughter picked out this star fabric so I made her a pair of Field Trip cargos and a Class Picnic blouse in orange, size 5. The pant are too big but she will grow into them. Star pants and orange shirt
I am entering the entire outfit into the Sewing for Children Competition, which is the Oliver + S Field Trip Cargo Pants and Class Picnic Blouse so I am reviewing both patterns at once. Field Trip Cargo Pants Blouse and pants Class Picnic Blouse Modeled outfit Pattern Description: I used the digital versions of both patterns. The Field Trip Pattern includes a knit long sleeved raglan T-shirt and Cargo pants. The Class Picnic Pattern includes a peasant style Blouse and shorts(which are fabulous by the way but I have yet to post a review and you can check out my Flickr stream to see them.). Pattern Sizing: The size ranges for these patterns is 6m-4 and 5-12. I made a size 8 and shortened the pants. I find the sizes to be consistent with RTW though the Cargo pants are much roomier than the skinny jeans that have taken over the world.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?Yes, but cuter!
Were the instructions easy to follow?Oliver + S instructions are wonderful!
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? The cargo pants pattern is versatile enough for a boy or a girl and the topstitching gives them a nice RTW look. I love the way the Class Picnic Blouse construction results in a clean finish on the inside. Normally I think peasant blouses scream "homemade," but the clean yoke on the front and back bring it to a more professional level without sacrificing easy construction and ease of wear, typical of the peasant style. My only contention is the finished sleeve is an awkward length.
I appreciate that the patterns are available in PDF form. I glue the pieces together instead of taping. Fabric Used:The pants are constructed from a plaid mystery twill with Hello Kitty Cotton Fabric for the pocket plus pink topstitching. The blouse is made from Hello Kitty Quilting cotton and red Kona Cotton with black Rick rack trim.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:I left off the cargo pockets and cut the knee sections of the pants on the bias.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?yes I plan to sew these patterns again and again. I have a son who will only wear track pants because he hates zippers, buttons...I think I can get him to wear the cargo pants because they don't require any of those things.
I am very please with the professional results these patterns yield. My daughter loves this outfit!
