Causal trousers with welt pocket variations.
Burda 36 through 44
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Were the instructions easy to follow?
I used all of the instructions except for the welt pocket. I used the 'Pants for Real People' book to help me make the one pocket I made.
I actually really like Burda's fly instructions and think this is the best fly I have ever made.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I liked the casual styling and I think the curved waistband fits well.
The order of construction was interesting as the back seam including the waistband is sewn last. This however made the pants harder to fit and I should have made a muslin. I ended up having to unpick the side seams and waistband at the sides to take the waist in after the pants were nearly finished.
A cotton/elastane blend... cotton sateen?
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
The pattern adjustments I made (when I was making it) were to add 1/2" to the front inner leg (1/2" at crotch tapering to 0 at hem). This alteration is Ala Sandra Betzina. I make this adjustment for my full front thigh, but I think it also helps with the pants sitting better over a belly.
After the pants were almost finished I realised I needed to take in the waistband about 1/2" each side and tapered to the hips.
After I made the pants and took the photos it became obvious that I had a jodphur-look going on at the sides. The side seams however hang pretty straight. So I decided it needed to be taken in at the sides at the 'jodphur' area from the back seam only. This did help.
I didn't put any pockets in the front but did do the one welt pocket on the back but added a button to it.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I may sew these pants again as I am pretty happy with the fit (which I know could still be improved) if I want another casual trouser style or the shorts version.
I am pretty happy with these pants and more photos can be found in this blogpost - here
