|Pattern Description: |
I made this using a couple of patterns. The bodice was from Simplicity 1873, and I took the gathered skirt pattern from Vogue 8723. Unfortunately I cant remember where I got the sleeve pattern from but its just an ordinary (no pleats, gathering etc) sleeve pattern.
I cut out size 12 for the pattern pieces.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Um sort of! Each piece did look like it should.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
I didn't refer to the instructions too much beyond the bodice and bodice lining. The gathered skirt and sleeves are pretty self explanatory if you have done a few dresses and tops with sleeves before. Instructions for the Simplicity pattern were really straight forward.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I love the outcome of mixing up the pattern pieces to get exactly what I like. This pattern is a great pattern base to do this with!
I reproduction vintage cotton from Spotlight
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I did change the bodice by redrafting it with a lower back and a higher neckline. I also chose a sleeve length to fit me and lengthening the skirt pattern so it feel just below the knees.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes, I think I might give a similar dress a go given this pattern mash up worked really well. It does throw you in the deep end if you have been sewing for a long time and you want to start moving away from directly sewing up what the pattern says.
Love how this turned out and would wear it all the time if I could! I recommend trying belt making as it really does finish off a dress fantasically and it just takes practise, it isn't too hard to conquer.
