I made a Dorothy Dress. I liked that Simplicity's pattern was exactly as seen in the movie. The McCall's pattern had a Peter Pan collar instead of the high neck with rick rack. Kids notice details like that.
I made a size 5 for a child who is turning 6. My small 5 year old and my normal size 8 year old were both able to put it on. It looked better on the 8 year old. This is my first non doll size pattern so I had no idea Simplicity runs big.
The pattern did turn out to look just like the photo on the front except for the little mistakes I made. Some of my gathers were not even and I was unable to figure out the band that is supposed to go around the bottom.
Except for the band that goes around the bottom the pattern was extremely easy to follow. This was my first time ever making a person sized dress and I was able to pull it off (I've only made a few doll clothes and some bags. I'm new to sewing - I've been sewing less than a year)
I loved the pattern. I loved working with blue gingham. It was very fun.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I made a two inch blind hem.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I made this pattern for a friend's child and my kids want one too. I may have to make another - perhaps two!
Conclusion: Great pattern. Great for beginners! Sizes run big so beware of that.
