|Pattern Description: |
Denim jacket with shaped yokes in front and back, zipper, snap closure at neck and open cuff sleeves.
Custom sized using the advanced options on the Russian site. I was still tweaking my measurement string on this jacket, so the fit isn't as good as on some of the other Lekala garments I have made.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, although I made some small changes.
Pictures are here.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
No, they are a Google translate job.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I was attracted by the unusual shaped yokes in this pattern. I've had this fabric for absolutely ages and didn't know what to do with it after I had inflicted a tie-dye and fabric paint experiment upon it. The pattern and fabric seemed to match.
There are some unnecessary seams which I eliminated in front and converted to a tiny dart in the back.
I do not like the open cuffs. I will eliminate them if I make this again.
Wall-of-text comments on sewing with Lekala here.
Denim-like cotton twill.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
As mentioned above, there are some unnecessary seams which I eliminated.
There are some seriously curved seams in this pattern, which they tell you to topstitch, but I think this is not enough to get a neat finish on the inside, so I drafted a lining and used up some non-matching remnants of lining to line the jacket.
If I make it again I will make the curve in the back yoke inset a bit rounder.
I simply could not find snaps for the neck closure, so I changed the shape of the collar, which unfortunately wasn't an improvement.
I added a sway back adjustment and added the equivalent of a bust-shaping dart by removing some paper from the yoke pattern piece.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Seeing how the point of Lekala patterns is to make as few adjustments as possible, I suppose that this is not the most successful pattern in their catalog, but if you need a jacket with this kind of shaped insert, and you are willing to make a few easy modifications, go for it.
I didn't seriously hope to get a wearable jacket out of this - it was more of an experiment, but if I can find the proper snaps for the neck band, I think I will make it again.
Ok pattern, but there are similar Lekala patterns that you might prefer.
