|Pattern Description: |
The pattern is described as a "fitted dress (close-fitting through bust), has self lined bodice, seam details, side front pockets, an invisible back zipper, and a vent."
I decided to go with a size 14, although this is not my size, I wasn't certain if this fit would work with my body type and wanted to make sure that if I had any issues making it or didn't care for how it turned out, I could possible give it to family or a friend!
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, the pattern looked like the photo on the pattern envelope. Although there were some issues in the sewing and construction process, overall it was very similar to the picture.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
The instructions to constructing the dress were easy to follow and I appreciated the chance to put the dress together in a different way (the top and skirt were put together before the back closing hem was done. That was new to me as I am use to closing off the skirt and putting them together as whole pieces.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
The things that I liked about the pattern is the skills that I was able to practice and try for the first time. What I disliked the most is the that only the outer pockets are noted to use with lining fabric and in my opinion both the inter bodice pieces, both the front and the back could have been made in the lining pieces, thus cutting down on the amount of fabric needed for the body of the garment.
I also had some concerns around the side inserts. I'm not sure if it's a beginner sewer issue, but they didn't fit into the curves properly. So much so I thought I cut the wrong size and had to go back and check my cutting lines. On all four inserts there was at least an inch of fabric that just didn't fit. I found that to be very frustrating.
I used some left over African print in navy blue, red, yellow, and a hint of white.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I didn't make any alterations this time, but if I make this dress again, I would make the skirt longer. The reason being is that I found the portions between the bodice, the neckline and the skirt to be a little off. I though that the neckline was too deep for such a short skirt and thus seemed a little off. I would also note that I choose an African cotton print with a reoccurring pattern. Not a good idea unless you are for certain you are mirroring the pattern. I thought I did, but it didn't turn out as such and may be adding to my issues!!
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I probably won't sew this again. I'm very curvy and I can totally see an issue with the inserts.
If the cut out trend is still going next spring, I may try again with the front and back bodice inserts out!
Overall I found this pattern to be filled with new techniques that will help me with other projects, including the positioning of the inserts, working with the bodice and the skirt and once piece before closing it off with the zipper, and lining up reoccurring patterns.
Maybe with the proper styling and accessories this may work, but it won't be my go to pattern when I need a nice simple dress!
