|Given the poor lighting when I took the photos of me wearing the jacket, I've decided to make use my dress dummy (with much better flash) as the main photo. There are photos of me wearing it further down the review.|
Fitted, partially interfaced, lined to edge jacket, with raised back neckline and front lapels, detail front and back with princess seams and flared sleeves with seam. Semi-fitted lined skirt with detail seams, back pleats, contour waist, side zipper closing and mid-knee length.
This is a practice toile for the final version I intend to make for when I go to my sister's wedding. Hence no lining has been added and the collar has no facing.
The envelope I bought was 14-20. I made a 12 for neckline and shoulders, tapering out to a 16 for the waist.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Pretty much identical!
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Certainly easier than the instructions for the skirt (which I made earlier this week - see separate review).
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
This was so much easier to sew up than the skirt in terms of time. I like the elegant lines and unusual bust shaping. The peplum is so cute too!
Woven wool, a steal for a toile at £5 a meter. The pattern had you interface everything bar the sleeves, which is great as it helped stop it fraying madly.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
Relatively few compared to the skirt. The ease was much better this time round. Just took in the side seams (tapered) by a quarter inch from the hem up to the arm scythe. I lengthened the sleeves but will have to add more to the final version as I had to cheat the hem (only 2cm) to get the right length.
I also didn't use the flared sleeve ends - not my thing. So modified the pattern piece to create straight ending sleeves.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
You know what, I was having some niggles and doubts after finishing the skirt, but am now all enthused again - so yes!
I think this jacket is a real winner (great for those like me with a tummy to conceal) and can be dressed up or down. Another great thing, one of the button holes is created in the bust (horizontal) shaping seam. How neat is that? one less button hole to make has to be a good thing!
