| Design background: I am reviewing the skirt to go with another costume. I need the bolero off this pattern to go with a rescued skirt. This is for another 1889 Lady of influence. I am doing View A. |
Pattern Description: Misses’ Victorian era steam punk inspired costume sewing pattern includes skirt in two lengths, bolero, top and bustier
Pattern Sizing:Size 16
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes it came out like the pattern.
Were the instructions easy to follow? Layout was unbelievably easy.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Like: How simple it is to construct. The difficulty comes from what trim you put on it.
Dislike: The only lay out they have for it is a 45" fabric. I ended up choosing a 60" fabric. I just used 45" layout. Because of that I had alot of fabric left over.
Main: Black Casa Crepe
Trim: Cream 5/8" grosgrain ribbon. It calls for 7 yards of trim for view A. It was going to be $20 to get ribbon at a normal store, but an online store that sells sewing notions in bulk had a 20 yd spool for $4. No brainer to know what to do there.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: None
Construction Notes: I found it odd that the pattern has you sew the trim on the jacket AFTER you have already sewn in the lining for view A. I always though you would do the trim before so that the lining moved freer. We shall see what works best.
From what I can see so far. The actual assembly of the jacket is easy, it is the trimmings that will add difficulty. When I got the ribbon in it was wider than what I remembered. I ended up pining the ribbon down, then pressing it so it laid flat, then stitched over the edges. That worked great to get it lay flat for stitching. I don't recommend trying to do the trim late at night. Getting those loops right with little sleep, is not a good idea.
Would you sew it again? Yes I will. It is too cute not to.
Would you recommend it to others? The construction was unbelievably easy. I made it in less than a half our, however I spent the next 2 hours working on the trim.
Conclusion: Simple fitted bolero. The difficulty will come from what you do for trim. choose wisely.
Actors comments & Photos:
This was taken at fitting, and I played a little with photoshop on it. Sue me I wanted to know what it would look like in those Vintage photos.
Shot of the back Keep in mind this is for the bolero only.
