|This is coat #3 my outerwear-palooza. This one is actually a birthday gift for my sister-in-law. I wanted to make her something special, and I'm really excited to send it to her. I apologize for the fit in the photos. I made the medium (size 12) and didn't feel like changing all the settings on my dress form to fill it out a bit more properly. |
Front view without the belt
Side ... sorry, the angle's a little weird
Oh my gosh....I had a big sewing moment with this coat. I set in all the sleeves in a single swoop WITHOUT A SINGLE PIN. Yay! Yay! Super yay!! I told my husband, and he just blankly stared at me, but then I asked him to pretend it was really awesome - and he did. He called me the Sleeve Master. Good guy.
Loose-fitting, lined, double-breasted jacket or coat with collar variations variations, side front seams, welt pockets, long sleeves and topstitching.
8-16. I made the 12. I wanted her to be able to wear a sweater under it comfortably. I probably could have made the 10 - it's quite loose at the waist.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, but I changed the button placement and made a belt.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
I didn't use them.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
It was the shape I was interested in: double breasted/above the knee classic coat.
Purple (her favorite color) wool blend twill double weave. The lining is a rich teal. I thought it would really pop, and be a little fun secret.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I gave her 3 extra inches in the sleeve (she is tall like I am).
There is an error in the lining draft. The back panel is too long, but it's an easy fix. I would also redraft it more to facilitate a classic all machine coat/jacket construction. But it's nothing major.
The welt pockets were a bit wonky. I interfaced all over the place but they were a little "floppy". Next time I would top stitch the top and bottom edge to the shell before attaching the lining to secure them better. This time I added two snaps to keep them in place.
I don't like the button placement for B/C (and this is totally just a personal preference thing) - I prefer four or three. Only two looked so odd to me. I also backed the buttons on the inside with these cute little black buttons that have some sparkle it them. My sister-in-law deserved sparkles.
Super special buttons
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I would. I might. I probably will. I'd like it in a more stable cotton twill or something.
I hope she likes it. I get so nervous sewing gifts....
