|I made this dress as my entry for the Fabric Mart contest. You can see the others and VOTE here and more pictures of the dress on my blog, which you can click on from there.|
I had been wanting to try this pattern and because I had to use an assigned striped fabric for the contest, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to try it. Unfortunately, my fabric wasn't nearly as stretchy as that called for in the pattern and only had "one-way" stretch but I was able to counteract the effect by using a larger size.
Luckily, I read in the directions that this pattern has "negative ease", meaning it would be even tighter, which you may want to consider even if you have properly "stretchy" fabric!
I found the best way to fit it was to make the underdress first, make sure it fit, and then lay the "shingle" pieces on it and enlarge them at the sides as needed.
When sewing the shingles right side up to the fabric, I found it very helpful to use fusible tape underneathe along the sewing line. Otherwise it would have been very difficult to keep them straight and taut.
My particular knit didn't have very attractive raw edges, which the pattern calls for, so I put black knit trim along the edges.
I really like this pattern and plan to make it again when I have enough striped fabric to cover the whole thing!
