I don't think this pattern needs much introduction... But here it is anyway! The Archer Button Up is a loosely fitting button up shirt with long sleeves. View A has angled cuffs and a back pleat at yoke. View B has straight cuffs and a gathered lower back detail.
I made a size 6 without any adjustments.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Were the instructions easy to follow?
SO easy to follow. Plus she has a tutorial online which makes it easier if you get stuck anywhere. She posted a video of how to sew together the collar stands which I found particularly helpful. That sort of stuff needs more visual input
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Well, I'm not much of a button-up shirt kind of gal. I think it's because I feel a little too formal. But the Archer is so wonderfully versatile and there are so many beautiful versions that I needed to give it a go - and I liked it to much I made a second! The first is View A with no alterations and the second I made after seeing this Anthropologie blouse and immediately wanted a flounced bottom.
Both fabrics are cotton shirting from Fabric Mart.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
No alterations in the first version (blue checked).
The only alteration I did make in the second to replicate the Anthropologie blouse was to separate the back gathered portion into two pieces, creating a tuxedo effect or penguin tails. If you look closely at the Anthropologie version it’s there. I think it’s fine, you can barely see the separation most of the time. I debated for a long time whether I would make this alteration for mine. In the end, I decided against it because I didn’t know whether it would be flattering and thought it would go out of style too quickly. If I made this variation again, which I might, I would continue the peplum flounce around to the front. I don’t like how the stripes go uninterrupted for the entire length of the front and not the back.
Also this shirt reminds me of a mullet, especially in the photos. “Business in the Front: Party in the Back!”. I also might need to consider sizing up around the bust…I’m getting some pulling at the buttons!
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes! I'll definitely sew this again. I can see why everyone raves about the pattern! I think it needs a few more alterations to fit me perfectly but it is a great start.
