Pattern Description: The Maritime Short is the perfect summer short, easy to wear, modern fit and plenty of room for customization. Make a pair in denim, brightly colored linen, go bold with a print or do all three! Features curved front pockets and stylized back patch pockets as well as a fly front closure.
Pattern Sizing: 0-18
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes!
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes I found the instructions very easy to follow. Sewing in a fly is always tricky but if you have done it a few times you will not struggle with these instructions and if you do - Google is your friend!
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I really like everything about the pattern. I like shorts with fly fronts, and I enjoy the patch pockets and the curved front pockets.
Fabric Used: Cotton Drill.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I made these shorts three times! First pair was too small and the second too big. These are size 4. I found that I had to take a massive wedge out of the back seam. I changed the construction slightly.
I sewed the crotch seam from the fly front end to just past the crotch seam. I then inserted the fly front. I then attached the waistbands to the left front/back and the right front/band. I then pinned the shorts and adjusted the back seam to fit. I altered the waistband facing to match the new angled back seam of the pants and waistband. This is similar to the way the Sewaholic Thurlows are constructed and make it much easier to fit the pants to your individual shape.
I also made the buttonhole horizontal rather than vertical as I think the button pulls less that way.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Absolutely. I adore these shorts and found the process of making them very rewarding and fun.
Conclusion: A great little pattern and I also think a great way to dip your toe into pants making without the commitment of sewing up full trouser legs. I made three pairs all from my stash from leftover pieces I had - super economical to make and very comfortable.
