|Pattern Description: |
Loose-fitting, lined jacket has collar, side pockets, back vent and belt. Lined, detachable collar has elastic loops. D: band. Semi-fitted skirt E has slightly raised waist, side front pockets, front vent and back zipper. Fitted, skirt F has elastic waist.
2 size ranges available. I used the 14-22 and started with the 22. It is a little large mostly because I was concerned about ease. I might make it a bit smaller next time. But the shoulders fit which is a real treat for me.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
No, but that is because I made design changes following Kenneth King's recommendations
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Did not use them. I made this coat following Kenneth King's Craftsy Class Carefree FlyFront Coat
Wool blend coating from my stash. I had to get creative to have enough fabric for the coat.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
Following the class, I made several changes.
1-converted the front to a princess style which puts the pockets in a comfortable place. Pockets at the side seam do not work well.
2-converted the back to have a yoke. This eliminated the shoulder dart. I also was able to put in a bit of high rounded back adjustment by putting a center seam in the yoke.
3-KK suggestion of rounding the collar attachment from the original sharp corner was fantastic and definitely helped assembly
4-Added a fly front which means my less than perfect buttonholes are not visible Yea
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes, I will sew this again. I have a well fitting jacket that I think will go a little faster now that I got through the pattern drafting
I needed hand holding to build my confidence to make a coat. Kenneth King's tips and instructions gave me the additional information that is just not available in pattern directions. Afterall they are not sewing lessons. I needed to know how to do the shoulder pad and sleeve heads. Also the collar always messes me up and he got me through that.
I have a tendency to dislike a garment after making it because I have spent too much time up close and personal. I focus on the flaws and what I should/could have done better. I left it on my dtd and realized it looked pretty good.
KK's fabric tip - select a fabric with a bit of pattern like a tweed, it is more forgiving and "flaws" don't show
