|Pattern Description: This is a Donna Karan pattern for a top and pants. I made the pants. This is what the pattern envelope says about the pants:|
Tapered, below waist (front) pants have seam detail, overlapped lower sides, and topstitching. Close-fitting, no side seams.
Pattern Sizing: 4 - 20. (Thanks, Vogue, for offering these in smaller sizes!!) I have 34" hips, which indicate a size 10. However, I like a closer fit, so I cut a size 6. They were perfect.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes.
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like the interesting seaming. I particularly liked the interesting hem details, which is an overlapped vertical slit with 4 rows of topstitching.
Fabric Used: You need to use a knit. The pattern only specifies "rayon spandex or cotton spandex", but the construction uses lapped seams, so the raw edges show. You want a double knit that won't ravel or curl. But it does need to have some stretch.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: Other than using a smaller size, I did my usual flat butt alteration and removed some of the crotch length. Also, I am 5'5" and these are quite long. They have a 1" hem and I cut 3.5" from the hem before sewing the 1" hem.
If you don't want to sew with a lapped seam, you can use conventional seams, HOWEVER, there is an inset corner that would be trickier to navigate in a conventional seam. Not impossible, but trickier.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? You betcha! I love these! I have had them on all day and don't want to take them off. They are close fitting, but comfy.
Conclusion: A great skinny pant! More on the blog.
