|Pattern Description: |
Gertie's own sizing system 2-16
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes. But there are simple things missing like lengthening/shortening lines, which given my discovery (see below!) might be helpful to new sewers.
The skirt calls for a 9" zipper and tells you to sew to the notch on the left side. The notch is 11" down so adjust accordingly. I know how to put a zipper in so I just went ahead and did it "my way" but after re-reading the instructions I noticed:
The instructions have you join all the skirt leaving the left side open for the zipper. The next step tells you to go to the page in the book which explains how to insert an invisible zipper, in those instructions it says leave your seam open, insert zip and close seam. I really dislike inserting zippers into two pieces of separate fabric and wouldn't suggest this approach. But that's just me.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Full, gored skirt, just what I was looking for!
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I had less than 1.8m for this skirt with 5cm/2" blank edges along both salvages so things were tight! I omitted the scalloped waist line, which I wasn't a fan of anyway, to manage my EFS (extreme fabric shortage).
Somewhere in the book Gertie mentions she's 5'7", hey! Just like me! So why then, did I have to cut 20cm/8" from the pattern to get it anywhere close to my knees? Is 3/4 of my height in my torso?
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I can certainly see sewing this again. I would recommend it to others, but if you're not very experienced read the instruction carefully and make a game plan.
