Misses Coat in three lengths
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Were the instructions easy to follow?
I had a terrible time understanding the collar. This is my first coat, so I'm sure it's just me, but I read and re-read the instructions and just couldn't figure it out, so I ended up hand stitching the upper collar and under collar together. I should probably take a class on this!
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I looooove the "English Riding Coat" look of this pattern. It has a fitted waist, which is very flattering, and then it flares out. Also, the styles are so different, you could make one of the other versions and no one would think it was the same coat.
This was my first coat, and I was too scared to use "real" fabric like wool, so I used fleece. The fleece was so easy to work with, and it also means that I don't have to finish the seams or do the lining. If I can get better at sewing, I would love to make it again in a nice wool.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I wanted the flared look, with the coat longer in back, but View B - which has that look - was much longer than what I wanted. So I simply made the coat to specifications, and then chopped about a foot off the finished product.
I thought an all-white coat might be a bit boring, so I added some pops of color by making the under collar, the pockets and half of the front panels in an orchid color. I actually didn't think any of the orchid would show on the final coat (a rather large miscalculation on my part!), but I have decided that I don't mind it, so I'm just going to pretend I planned it that way all along!
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes, I would sew it again, especially if I can learn how to do the collar properly. And for those of you who already know how to do this, I think you would find this coat to be a lot of fun to make and a great finished product.
I love this pattern - grab it while you can - I had to go to three stores before I finally found one in stock.
