Pattern Description: Very close fitting pull-on pants have crotch gusset, wide waistbands with elastic, twinneedle top-stitching. View A: Mid-calf length with leg gusset in outside seam. View B: Full length with waistband insets.

This review covers both views

Pattern Sizing: XS - XL. View A is a closer fit than view B. To gauge my size, I measured the hip on the pattern and pin marked that width on a double layer of fabric - they wrapped it around my hips to see how firm or loose it was. I made a size smaller than the size chart suggested.

Fabric Used: The pattern recommends fabric with 75% stretch. I used a heavy weight cotton lycra. The grey shorts are made from a cotton French terry with only 25% stretch. I went up a size for these.

Instructions: I don't think the instructions are up to the normal KS standard. The insertion of the gussets are very cumbersome. It is easier sew/serge the gusset to one side and then sew the sides together.

View A I was very disappointed with these and did not finish them off. The pattern drawing is incorrect wrt the placement of the side seam. It starts at the back and curves forward at the upper thigh (the opposite is shown in the drawing). The curve is subtle so it looked to me like a straight seem being pulled forward. I have "cyclists legs" so this seam just made my quads look even bigger. Fine if your lining up for a track sprint and trying to psych out the opposition but not a good look any other time.

I did like the leg gusset and thought it is a good candidate for colour blocking. I modified my TNT Ottobre Clara pattern to include the gusset. photo (review including instructions for drafting a leg gusset)

View B I really liked this pattern. It has a curved waistband, straight side seam and a slightly tapered leg. I made these as shorter versions for summer.

Design changes
For the grey shorts, I added a welt pocket on the right side to hold a key or MP3 player. The back facing of the pocket is attached to the waistband to stop the pocket sagging. grey shorts

For the black knee length pants, I checked the waistband to look like these Lululemon Dharana Crops. The back waistband is constructed the same as in the instructions. The front has a plain black waistband ( 2 layers) with an pieced overlay. This diagram shows how I drafted the overlays. It means that there are 4 layers of fabric for the font waistband. The fabrics I used for the overlays were light so it didn't add bulk.

finished pants - on me

Likeness to pattern photo/drawing: View A is incorrect. See comment above

Likes & Dislikes: I guess I was a bit disappointed with this pattern initially. It is the first KS pattern I've made since they were sold. Flimsy tissue patterns, incorrect drawings and unhelpful pattern instructions - it is just NOT the KwikSew we knew & loved!

However View B redeems the pattern somewhat. I like the cut of this pattern and the crotch gusset is very comfortable to wear.

Sew again? Recommend it? I'd sew view B again but wouldn't recommend view A.

Thanks for the review TF. I have just got this pattern and was going to trial View A so will have to have a think about it now. Great modifications and the waistband looks very on-trend.

Oh, oh, oh--I love that little treefrog logo. And the paperdoll cutout tabs took me back in time. Plus your handling of the images has become quite skillful. Love these shorts. My KS 3115 was also on the thinner paper and the back envelope shows NY,NY as opposed to the older Minneapolis, MN headquarters for KS. I really wished the thicker paper were still in use--so much more durable and easier to manipulate. I guess I understand it on a cost basis. I did wonder if the quality of instructions would suffer with the buy-out. Sounds like this KS might be totally under the new regime with no vestiges of the old KS. This reminds me of other products I have seen when a company was bought out and the product still carried the older name/logo but finally it was obvious the quality was no longer there. Still, you prevailed and got some quality looking activewear. I like the Lululemon inspiration for the waistband. Good going, treefrog.

I really appreciate your honest review of this pattern as I have also purchased it and was going to give view A a go, but so glad view B worked out. Love your waistband detail and hope you don't mind if I copy at some stage.

Another great review treefrog. Thank you for the "View A" comments. I recently bought this pattern and hope to make it soon. Very clever waistband and style addition to the legs.
