Pattern Description:
Misses Shirt Dress

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow?
I have tried to make a collar once before and failed. I tried again with this pattern and I just wasn't getting it. Then I watched a YouTube video of someone making a collar and suddenly it all clicked. So yes, the instructions were helpful and correct once I understood the concept.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
First - finally a shirt dress pattern that doesn't just look like a really long shirt! I like that a lot about this pattern - you get an actual dress you can wear, not a super long shirt that you need to wear with leggings because it's cut too high on the side. It's also a tailored look, so again, you don't have to bunch a baggy shirt with a belt.

The only dislike was that there was quite a bit of hand sewing. However, I must say, the hand sewing does make it look really nice and actually didn't take that long. And because of it, this is the first item I've made that I wouldn't mind showing the inside.

Fabric Used:
A soft denim.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I took out all, and I do mean all the top back gathers. I left in only the minimum about of bottom back gathers. I understand why that gathering is there, but I just don't like it. And this is the joy of sewing, yes? You make it the way you like it! I also though the cuffs were too big for my liking, so I trimmed mine down. Then, when I had two extra buttons left over, I thought they would look cute on the cuffs, so I added them.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Honestly, I might make this again as a shirt because I really like the tailoring. I do recommend it, but if you are like me and are incredibly lazy and looking for any excuse to skip hand sewing, this probably isn't the pattern for you. I tried to find any way possible to machine sew the hand sewn parts, and I found no shortcuts. Patient, experienced, sewists? You'll love it.

I hope it's okay if I post a link to Rosebud's blog about this pattern. She discovered a very important drafting error in the collar and collar band. So if anyone's having trouble with that part of the construction, just know that the problem is not with you. http://seam2seam.blogspot.com/2014/04/mccalls-6696-shirtwaist-dress.html#comment-form
