I came home from two intensive days of sewing under the tutelage of Susan Khalje so jazzed that I can hardly sleep! The class covered couture techniques that involved learning a lot of hand sewing skills (faggotting, slip stitch, thread tracing, hand-picked zippers and others) plus some machine work (perfecting bound buttonholes, narrow machine hems for chiffon and silk etc.), working with lace and too much else to list. We got some supplies, an autographed copy of her book "Bridal Couture", a stack of handouts a half inch thick which covered everything in the class plus some additional material and a list of resources. Susan couldn't be nicer- she helped each student, offered suggestions in a non judgemental way and entertained us with her anecdotes about her early experiences in New York. She zeroed right in on my struggles in hand sewing by pointing out that as a "lefty", I should sew as a "lefty" and quit trying to adapt to a right handed world. After I gave it a try, I found things a lot easier. Best of all, she brought lots of gorgeous examples of her work to look at and drool over including the magnificent Chanel jacket featured in Threads. It is much more beautiful than the picture and all of us want to take her Chanel jacket class! She will be back in Sacramento in September for the full Six Day Couture School and I plan to be there too!
This isn't a class for someone who wants to learn some quick and dirty techniques to produce an "off the rack" garment. It is labor intensive hand techniques that if learned and practiced, will produce the kind of garments worthy of a Jackie Kennedy and which inspire awe and envy! Don't miss this opportunity if it is offered in your region!

Oh, thanks for reviewing this! I live in Sacramento, too, and I've been considering attending this seminar when my skills improve some more.

I signed up the day after my two day class ended and I was the last to enroll before the class closed. There are only 10 participants so I feel really lucky! I was nervous myself about my level of expertise, but Susan was so nice and helpful that I forgot to be nervous. I have over six months to get my act together. I can hardly wait!
