D'ya know what I mean? It's when you get two big circles (flowers, faces, whatever) centred directly over the girls. It draws unwanted attention to the bust area - everybody who sees you can see the headlamps and nothing else.
It often happens by accident. We sew a lovely garment, put it on for the first time and look into the mirror. Headlamps!
And we *never* wear our lovely garment again.
Here's a way to reduce the risk of headlamps.
When working with a fabric that has large motifs or distinctive coloured patches, mark the location of your bust on your bodice pattern.
Hold the bodice pattern against your body and draw a circle on the pattern around one breast. When you put the pattern piece on your fabric, you will be able to determine exactly where the motif will appear relative to your bust. If the paper is somewhat transparent, you will hopefully be able to see the motif right through the paper. If the paper is thick or the motif is subtle, you can lift the paper and look under it to see the motif.
If you cut the fabric in a single layer, you can check both sides. If you prefer to cut the fabric in a double layer, you can put pins into the outline of the circle, then flip the fabric over to see whether the motif appears in a critical location on the other side. |

I just ran into this problem. I had to make 4 Amy Butler sashes (scarfs) instead of my intended LH funnel/boatneck blouse. Next time I'll try your useful method.

Haven't we all done that a time or two?? I even see ready made outfits on friends that have the large motifs centralized over the girls. Thanks for the preplanning tip.

hahah, too funny. THis is a common oversight I see often in my sewing classrooms. Somehow by some unexplainable force, sewers manage to get that "bullseye" more often than you would imagine!! I caution them regularly...
