To insure your stitching, tracing, or any line is straight, place your fabric/paper surface at eye level and view the line. Using this technique, you should notice even the slightest curve in the line.

This is especially helpful if your straight line extends beyond the length of your ruler. This method is often used by carpenters and builders.
