A Little Background Info:
I had a wonderful opportunity this year to attend the Sewing & Quilting Expo in Northern Virginia for 3 days. It had been months since I turned on my sewing machine and I wanted to take classes to get my sewing mojo back. One area that was a problem child for me was sewing pants for myself. I attempted last year and made many tweaks that I could no longer figure out what my pants should look like let alone how it should fit. When I was ready to sign up for my classes, this pants class caught my attention: Lose 10 Pounds in a Day-Make Pants That Fit with Judy Kessinger

The Class:
This 3 hour evening class was held in a meeting room at a hotel next door to the Dulles Expo center. The minute I arrived into the room, Judy was armed with a measuring tape and my goodie bag and proceeded to take my measurements. I had a feeling that this was going to be a fun class.

In my "goodie bag" I received a yard stick, Dritz tape measure, 6 inch clear ruler, 1 yard of draw cord elastic, Master Pants Pattern, and Pattern Ease tracing cloth. She also provided us with a summary chart/guide with our measurements and summary of steps to create our own pants pattern.

Judy gave us instructions and steps to follow in tracing our own pattern from the master pants pattern (based on our own measurements) each of us received. As you can imagine, everyone's measurements were different and so were our shapes. She did a demo of what we needed to do and let us loose (all 20 of us) to measure, draw, and create our own pants pattern.

It was interesting to listen to other sewists and their pants sewing experiences. I felt so comfortable in this class.

Judy went around to each and everyone of us to make sure our drawn patterns were done correctly. For one test, she held up my front and back pants pattern and matched the sides at the top corner to see if both crotch shelf were in alignment. I'm happy to say...they were in alignment. :)

We learned how to tweak our initial pair of pants (when sewn at home). We learned about Judy's favorite pants fabrics and recommendations. There were many other fascinating and interesting techniques we learned.

I thoroughly enjoyed this class. It was a great hands-on class. Great for a person like me who just wants to have a pair of great fitting pants without all the mathematical calculations or measuring every square inch. Simple is better for me.

I will be sewing (and tweaking) a pair of pants from my new pattern over the next few days. I will be back to post my results. :)

Ditto on a great review! A question: do you think one could use the pattern without the class (if one lives out the middle of nowhere) and satill get a good fit? thanks -

Maybe if you get your MoJo back, the same will happen to me. I am always inspired by your work. My experience with pants has been similar to yours. If this method works out for you, maybe I'll try it.

Thank you for the terrific, detailed review. I'm hoping your pants turn out is one type of garment you really can make over and over. I have a (custom)pattern I've used for years! Hope you get your sewing "mojo" back; I always enjoy your garments!!!!
