This is a making-do tip.
For those of us who don't have sergers, and can't or won't buy/make miles of bias tape. (looks nice, but is expensive and time consuming)

Finish the edges of your fabrics with a decorative stitch, set to a small stitch length.
I buy serger threads in my most used colours, put one in a coffee mug behind my sewing machine, thread as usual, and then set my machine to scallop stitch at a short stitch length.
This is nice for things like slips, and linings, where a little less bulk at the hem is a good thing.
This is also a good technique to finish all inside seams of garments. (Particularly rayon.)

Great idea! I have an 80+ stitch Brother sewing machine. It features decorative stitches. One in particular is close to a serger stitch. I use a large spool and plenty of bobbin (white or other neutral color) and just sew close to the raw edge. It works great!
