Use clear tape for holding down trim or other small parts, especially when working with teensy pieces like button loops.
For example, I made button LOOPS (not holes) for a sleeved underdress (Simplicity 2573). Deciding not to face or line the sleeves, I simply turned over a 1/4" hem (using 1/8" and another 1/8" to hide raw seams). I used smooth satin cording for the loops. I measured the spacing, cut the lengths and taped them into place using narrow clear tape. I put nice trim over the top of the tape and sewed it all in place, using a very short stitch in thread the same color as the trim. The trim covers the tape, and I didn't have to sew the loops down and then sew back over the trim, making extra "thread bulk."
It's very easy to remove the tape after you've sewn the loops down.
If you don't use trim over the top, you can sew the loops between fabric pieces if you are making a lined item, making the ends of the loops unseen.
I used a short-cut method and saved myself about half an hour.
