I love using grossgrain ribbon in waistbands... I like to "build" my waistband from grossgrain ribbon, especially when I am altering or playing with the design. I sew the main seams of the bottom (and top if there is one, as in dress with top and skirt parts). Then I pin the grossgrain ribbon where I want the waistband (or other division between the top and bottom). Next I pin the top and or bottom to the ribbon. Then I make my adjustments.
I also like picking a grossgrain ribbon color that compliments/contrasts with the fabric.
There is also an earlier tip about grossgrain ribbon and waistbands that is also very interesting.
