Customized Pattern Weights

It is very easy and economical to make pattern weights using metal washers. Making them yourself will allow you to customize the heaviness, make them as large as you want and select a covering of your choice.

1. Assemble several 1 1/2 inch or 2 inch diameter metal washers. Metal washers are circles with holes in the middle. They can be found at a home improvement store for about 30 and 40 cents each respectively. You will also need bias tape, a glue gun or 1/4 to 1/2 inch drafting tape.

2. Determine how heavy you want the weight to be by stacking the washers. I stacked three to four (more if needed).

3. Glue gun the washers together to form one pattern weight. Drafting tape will also work. Just wrap it around the washers. Keep everything straight and even.

4. Wrap the bias tape at an angle around the set of washers.

5. Stitch the end of the binding in place. Thatís all there is to it.

One small pattern weight cost around 90 cents; one large pattern weight cost about $1.20. Given the cost of the commercial ones, the savings is considerable.

Another advantage is that they do not take much time to make. Twelve can easily be made in one sitting. With more effort, the cloth cylinder ones sold in stores can also be sewn at home. Many sewers are making both types for sale.
