I've been sewing clothes for our granddaughter lately, using mostly cotton fabrics, so groups of buttonholes are required for closures. I'd noticed before that my sewing machine needles would dull by the time the buttonholes were sewn, so I'd change to a new needle.
When sewing a little dress with 7 buttonholes last week, I could only find a size 14 quilting needle. (Note to self: stock up at next sale.) So I tried the quilting needle and was thrilled to see the lovely quality of the buttonhole stitches!
Quilting needles are extra-sharp and made to go through layers of fabric and batting, so they work well with the layers of fabric and interfacing. Try them! |

Amazing what we find out when we have no other choice! =) I've found that the different styles of needles offered these days are a wonderful thing, can make sewing so much more enjoyable and the outcome of our projects nicer. I've made up a few sample cards with different types of fabrics I've sewn with different types of needle/ thread combos so I can remember what I've done that was successful. Thanks for the great tip!

I start a project with the needle from the previous project and change needles when I get to the buttonholes. This way the needles is at it's sharpest when I need it most and I am still changing the needle for every project. Of course if the items are small I change every two or three items but the idea is the same.
