This week I put some zippered pockets on to a skirt. When I sewed in the first zip I got the pocket bag caught in the stitches, so I had to rip it all out and start again. This time I fastened the bag to the skirt with safety pins to keep it out of the way. It worked perfectly. Straight pins would have got in the way and even fallen out.

I keep painter's tape or masking tape nearby, which is helpful in case you are concerned that the safety pin will snag on the machine.

I am afraid that masking tape will not hold the pockets out of the way, safety pins are more secure
