This is an online class offered through Craftsy and taught by Angela Wolf. (You might know her from classes offered here on PatternReview or on the It's Sew Easy tv show.) The class covers some of the most used basic alterations to RTW clothes including invisible zipper replacement, jacket sleeve hems, trouser and jean hems, t-shirt re-shaping, hemming skirts, lengthening pants, taking in pant waistlines, and shoulder/armhole adjustments. Class price is $39.99 (but if you're willing to wait, there's usually sales throughout the year that reduce that even more).

First let me mention the Craftsy platform. The video quality is great. I watched with Google Chrome as I kept getting stuttering with IE. You can make notes to yourself, ask the instructor questions, and the video comes right back to where you left off (unless you choose a different lesson). I really like that I can go back again and again to view the videos and ask questions. I've found the Craftsy staff to be responsive and have great customer service. The only thing I wish they would add would be the ability to easily download the videos for viewing offline or in areas of slow connection speeds. I recommend giving Craftsy a try.

Our instructor for this class was Angela Wolf and I found her to be very quick to respond to comments/questions, as well as, very knowledgable in the subject of alterations. She even helped answer questions for students that were beyond the scope of this class. I found her presentation on video to be friendly and interesting, no monotone boredom watching here. She also did a very good job of showing the steps and demonstrating what she was talking about (also she is obviously used to the whole filming thing as she did not act nervous or hesitant at all). I imagine that if you were actually there in person, the class would be quite similar. I would, without hesitation, take another class from Angela whether on Craftsy or here on PatternReview.

The subject matter was basic or beginner alterations in ready-to-wear and I felt that this was well covered. Each alteration presented was one that you would probably see a lot of without being too advanced for someone who doesn't do alterations for a living, but would also be a good foundation for someone looking to get into the business. Angela used contrasting threads when demonstrating techniques so that watchers could see what was being sewn more easily. She also gave alternative ideas, tips, and suggestions for achieving a more professional look to your alteration. I appreciated the lessons on pant hemming and lengthening which showed the correct lengths and styles for current trends, including keeping your original jean hem. The lesson on replacing the invisible zipper also shows you how to sew one in with just a regular zipper foot, so no specialty foot necessary. Once you have a technique down, none of those shown are very difficult or take a great deal of time, but they make a huge difference in how the clothing fits. I'm always being asked to alter RTW clothes, so I was excited to get this class and will definitely use all of the lessons at some point. While I'm hoping there will be additional alteration classes with intermediate and advanced techniques, I've already made $50 using some of this class, so its paid for itself which makes me happy! Even better is the $$ I'll save doing these alterations myself!

I took this class also. Agree that it was a good investment and it inspired me to get one of her clappers and a stash of seam rippers so I always a sharp one on hand. I have altered several pants, a dress, and skirt for a granddaughter who is building a wardrobe for summer insternship. It was a just in time great investment for me.
