To make a fabric rose quickly and easily, first cut a bias strip twice as wide as the depth you want the 'petals' to be, and about 5 or 6 times as ong as the width (make some test roses to get the length right). Taper the ends to a point at the middle. Fold the strip in half (you can get a nice effect if you slightly offset the two edges). Use the overlocker (serger) to sew the edges together, leaving along thread tail when you finish. Thread the thread tail into a large eyed, blunt embroidery needle and run it through the stitching all teh way back to the beginning, and use this to gather the rose. Don't pull it very tight as the rose will be a better shape if it is looser. Tie the thread tail you threaded through to the one at the beginning and trim them off. Take a needle threaded with matching thread and attach it to one end of the stitching - this becomes the centre of your rose. Now start rolling the rose up, stitching each piece to the centre as you go. When you finish, you have a rose that is already neatened at the bottom.
