New York Elegant Fabrics
I wrote this review almost a week ago but it wouldn’t post and I didn’t save a copy of it—my bad. Hopefully I can recall everything that would be of interest to PR readers!
New York Elegant Fabrics would be my first choice for fabric if I were a New Yorker. I hadn’t been in there for decades—but now it’s as close to the “old school” garment district places as I think a consumer can get (except much better organized than most used to be!)
There are two levels. I only visited the street level because the mezzanine seemed to be busy with students, and I could see a big selection of faux furs up there (not something I’ve needed lately/ever).
Next to the cutting table was nice selection of Liberty prints, priced at $44 to $45 a yard. There were dozens of nice, traditional prints. Their other cotton prints seemed to run $14.50 or so (for recognizable brand names/maybe quilty quality) and $9.98 (for apparel-blouse/shirt quality). Cotton jacquard prints (pique weight) were $24.95/yd.
I didn’t run across any ITY knits, but I didn’t especially look for any. They have a very nice color selection of cotton jersey solids (but no white or black). They also have a heavy knit that I’d describe as open rib knit—in many basic colors. Not sure if it is a cotton or an acrylic.
They have a good selection of velvets on frames and some silk-blend ones that you’d have to dig for. I didn’t see any stretchy types or velours. The prices on the velvets were about average retail, maybe $29.98 for regular acetate type and more for micros and silk blends. I saw some pretty colors in the silk velvets but looked like the yardage was small and the nap was probably crushed from being in the midst of such a big stack, so I didn’t bother asking for help.
They have lots of plaids in wool blends. They also have some nice loosely woven wool/mohair/other boucle (multicolors) that would be nice for a Parisian jacket, priced at $49.99 for Italian and $59.99 for French. I could see a piece I liked but it was short yardage so again did not have anyone pull it for me.
Lots of 45” silk prints right at the entryway. Prices I think were $29.98 but might have been a bit more. Some pieces were pretty and would be nice if you wanted to stock up for the long term.
There were some cottony-type solid laces (not like traditional cotton lace but more like laser-cuts combined with lace—probably were synthetic but had a nice matte look). I’ve seen a few dresses made of dense laces and laser cuts this season and an inquiry or two here on PR for such things.
All in all, if I lived in a fabric desert I think New York Elegant would be a great place to stock up on “better” goods for sewing for myself and maybe even other people. Or if I lived in NYC I would certainly stop there first for my fabric needs.
