Idle question about other members' use of techology (Moderated by Deepika)
Posted on: 6/4/17 1:54 PM ET
Inspired by the recent topic on Facebook, I want to ask if others here use Skype.
I've used it a few times and have nothing against it if I look reasonably OK and am in a tidy setting. Most of my friends and family (who in the main are older) don't like it.
I'm not saying that every call has to be by Skype, but sometimes it's nice to see the other participant's face.
I vaguely remember seeing the Picturephone at the 1964 World's Fair.

I use Skype for Business all day long at work for IMs, calls, and meetings. I have the regular app on my phone and use it occasionally for international calls, never with the camera on, though. It's a useful tool, for sure, but I've found the app itself can be buggy (calls won't ring through on my phone unless I've got the app open and active). I don't see myself giving up my cell phone plan for it or anything, though I know people who don't have a mobile plan (or home phone plan) and only use Skype for calls.

I had a job interview via Skype once! Other than that, I haven't used it too much. I have also used Google Hangouts for work, though we typically use Go To Meetings for meetings and we have a secure video platform for meeting with clients.
I do use use FaceTime with our family members as they have apple phones/iPads and we can use it from our Mac, which is in the kitchen. It's great for holidays because we can all feel like we are there together.

I use Skype at work. At home I use FaceTime. One of my closest friends lives in London and we chat for hours for free. if we weren't all on Apple products we would likely use Skype.

My friends and I who grew up in the 60's snd 70's laugh at this and ourselves, because having grown up with the Jetsons and Star Trek we couldn't wait until the "picture phone" was a reality! Now that it is, with Face Time , Skype, et al, we wouldn't be caught dead with our friends seeing us as we chat!!

I made eight bridesmaids dresses for my daughter's wedding, and thanks to face time and Skype was able to fit the Muslins through video chats. Can't say enough good things about how beneficial that technology has been for me.

It feels very Jetsons to me, but I think it's nice to have the technology for many reasons.

I used Skype to get help fitting my wedding dress and it was amazing.
I live a long ways from my mom and dad and could never get them to use Skype to talk to my son but once I got her an iPod she loves using FaceTime. I don't understand the difference but to her there is one I guess.

I use Skype only if the other person is on Android or Windows. I use FaceTime for people who use Apple products. Everybody in our extended family is on at least some Apple products with the exception of one family that whose decision to go Android was price-driven, and my MIL who doesn't have a cell phone (and the computer at her house is really only there for the children and grandchildren).
My parents are all Apple, and my mom loves using FaceTime on her Macbook Air.
