threading elastic (Moderated by EleanorSews)

Many stores carry pants for kids with adjustable elastic. It's encased in the inside back of the pants, and has buttonholes, and a button at each side, so you can adjust the waist for kids. I love this feature.
Anyhow, my 2 year old ripped the elastic out of the casing. Now I have a useless pair of jeans. I tried a loop turner but it didn't work. It's too flimsy. I am thinking of purchasing a bodkin (don't have one yet). Do you think this would do the trick for threading the elastic piece back into the casing? Any ideas besides ripping out the seam? Thanks.

The old fashioned way of doing this is with a large safety pin attached to the end of the elastic and then pushing it through the casing. It's easy enough the feel the safety pin through the fabric.

I prefer the safety pin. Sometimes those bodkins loosen and you lose your elastic and have to start all over. Just make sure the pin is really anchored by putting it through one of the buttonholes or at least an inch from the end so the elastic can't split or fray and let go of the pin. It's also good to pin the loose end onto the pants near the waist so it doesn't suddenly get swallowed up inside the waist band.

I like a bodkin or this long purple thing that is sold for replacing drawstrings. Does anybody know what it's called? Is it the String Thing or something like that? Anyway, I bought it at JoAnn's and it's been so handy!

Thanks. I will try the safety pin method or the purple thing from Joann's.
