DH needs a few yards of wide non-roll elastic (the kind with the wide ribs) for a costume, and we need to dye (or paint) it grey. It's polyester and rubber. My instinct is Rit Dyemore, but I thought I'd ask and see if anyone had better suggestions. I have a pack of regular old powdered Rit, which would save me $7.00 if it works, but I've never used it and don't even know if it would work on the poly/rubber even a little bit. I've only done a couple stovetop dyeing projects with DyeMore, iDye, etc.

It's the elastic that looks like this (only wider):

Thanks!!

Poly doesn't do much with plain ol' Rit. I'd go for one of the ones that will dye poly, like IDyePoly or your Dyemore (which I haven't tried).

(And just so you know for future costumes, Strapworks now makes their own sublimation dyed elastics, and does custom stuff, too, including printed elastics up to 2" wide: http://www.strapworks.com/Elastic_s/63.htm I've used them for straps for a number of years now... they'll make me two wheelchair lift straps ($80 each at medical supply stores) for $15, and they've been fine and very fast.

Pacific Trimming has a website and while the site doesn't have the enormous selection of the store, they do have colored elastic on the website. The Rit dye you've got won't dye synthetics.

It you google dying elastic, quite a bit comes up. Here is one I had read before:

and Thisdying elastic

height 5'2" bust 36, waist 31, hip 39.
I have way too many yards to count, and I will never use them up, but I will die trying!

Thanks, everyone. We HAD the perfect match of strapping picked out at Strapworks, but somebody dragged his feet until it's too late to order, so we are on deadline/Prime scheduling now! LOL That said, I made the executive decision that while I also prefer the texture of the non-roll elastic, I don't have time to experiment with dyeing this week, so I ordered grey webbing instead. Done. (This is not an application that has any need to stretch, so I also wasn't worried about damaging the rubber with heat.)
