Hello! I'm not new to sewing, but I wasn't sure where else to post a question like this and given the question, I feel like I'm new to sewing because I can't figure this one out, despite sewing for close to 25 years.

I bought the downloadable version of Burda Cutout Back Top 07/2015 #120A: http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/cutout-back-top-072015

I cut the pattern out on this really great fabric I'm excited about. I managed to get to the front darts and the neckline sewn and the back pieces together. Then, the directions got so confusing, I can't follow them anymore. There are no visuals to go with anything, just words. I can see how the pieces might fit together, but I can't make sense of it.

I find Burda extremely frustrating when they don't include figures and refer to each piece by it's number. I'm disappointed because I have the entire thing cut out and I've been suck all evening. I can't seem to find anything online about this pattern, so I posted to the Burda forum in hopes that someone could provide clarity. Any advice?

I may hire someone local to give me a private lesson on this pattern just so I can complete it, but it hardly seems worth the price of a lesson

Thanks! - Rachel

The thing I'm unclear about is the strap across the upper back.

Any chance of getting a photo of the pattern pieces, with a notation of how many of each you're supposed to cut? Or do they give you a cutting diagram? I can see how I'd make it, but my way would require a lining or at least a doubling of fabric to make things neat, and I'm not sure you've got that to work with.

Well, I was going to post the pictures I took but apparently you have to post them and link to them? I haven't been on here in so long I didn't realize that. I see images in other people's forum posts...so I'm not sure how to do it. Trying to figure it out.

I'm confused by the word "cut-on" straps as a descriptor. I can't make sense of how those straps - #2 pattern piece - fit to the top of pattern piece 3 in a way that works for the way I think it's supposed to be constructed. At first, I thought I was supposed to sew the #2 piece to the front piece #1 at the under-arm bands up to the neck edge, then attach them some how to the #3 piece.

Is the "armhold facings" the #2 pieces that include interfacing, and if so, where am I actually stitching them to the #7 pieces (back facings)?

I also don't understand the references to "seam #3"

I'm reading from the French issue and sounds like what you do for a all-in-one facing in a sleeveless dress.

So forget the backlessness and look up this type of facing sewing.

Sorry, on my phone but start by sewing 2 and 3 together at the shoulder, it will form the armhole. Then check the appropriate tutorial.

Basically you will sew 7 over 2+3, sewing at the armhole until the shoulder line mark on 2. You are going to pull the garment by an opening so maybe practice on a mock-up?

Sew 6 to 1 RST to finish the front neckline.

Piece 2 is cut 4 times, for the front and as facing+strap combo that will be inside the garment.

So two pairs to create:

2+3 garment (outside)

2+7 facings (will be inside)
