Anyone know of any good flat pattern drafting workshops? Preferably in the Midwest but willing to travel for a good intensive.

Apparel Arts run intensives and classes.

May also be worth contacting them about off-site workshop bookings.
The advantage about apparel arts classes is that you can also buy the video classes as on-line sewing notes/reminders if you want them so you don't have to keep it all in your head.

I've taken all of Suzy Furrer's class on Craftsy (she owns Apparel Arts) and her classes are excellent. They are also affordable, especially if you buy them on sale.

looking for more of in person class then I don't mind doing video, but I learn best in person and especially with fitting and drafting think hands on approach will be best. seems like more of the sewing retreats are geared towards quilters and not much for garment sewists

College outside of LA or NY might be the best bet.

I took a 21-day pattern making class at FIT 10 years ago. It was called a "Summer Interim" or "Summerim" course and was offered in July, after the end of the Summer term, which is about six weeks and starts in May. I assume they still offer it. There were people who'd traveled from out of state to take it. I can't recall if it met four or five days a week.

There's also a one-month Winter term in January, but I don't know if pattern making is offered. I would contact the Continuing Education department.

The option of the videos is great. If I lived in the SFO area I'd definitely check that out. The problem with FIT classes is that while there is a curriculum with exercises that must be covered, the teacher almost never follows a book. It's great to have the teacher's take, but sometimes a beginner is better off having reliable notes or reference sources.

In addition, the classes are large and officially you're not supposed to record videos on your phone, although some teachers look the other way. The benefits are being able to use the work rooms after hours, access to the Library and student discounts.

I took Suzy furrer’s intensive class- the first one she did maybe 3 years ago. I loved her craftsy classes so much and wanted to go to the next level. I couldn’t recommend it more highly. Many of us shared accommodations during the 4 trips to Oakland. I learned so much and you are right- hands on, discussion about theory, being around others with a similar passion- just doesn’t get better than that. Suzy is one of the finest teachers I’ve ever encountered

Drawing new patterns is very hard job you have to be very creative minds. But if we keep practicing we can learn to draw new patterns.

I totally agree with you about retreats (even the TOL sms) they are geared toward quilters. Peggy of Silhouette Patterns does in person teaching but mostly around her patterns and fitting and fit.
