Hi there!
I just finished sewing a version of this cutout back Burda top: http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/cutout-back-top-072015
I finished the top but it's not a perfect fit in the back: the straps in the back pop up a bit and don't lay flat. I'm trying to figure out the issue. The pattern pieces is the same as the front pieces (pattern piece #2) which fit perfectly in the front, but I think I need to alter them in the back. That, or I need to alter pattern piece #3. I have a very small back and often need to take everything in in my shoulders and upper back b/c my frame is small. I've attached pictures of the pattern pieces, and how things fit when I have the top on. Any recommendation? Should I alter piece #2 when I cut them for the back? If so, how? Note: The pieces still popped up even before I had added the back tab that pulls the back together, so I don't think that back tab is the cause.
Thanks!
Rachel

Wow! That strap kick-out is dramatic! Compare to the paper pattern to make sure the kicked out edge didn't stretch, then pin out the excess length as wedges across the strap till it lies correctly on your back. Transfer those changes to your pattern.

Since you are dealing with the back of your garment, you will need a "fitting partner" in order to get the fit corrected. Put your top on and have your fitting partner pin in darts to get the straps to lay flat. Check to make sure you can move your arms comfortably. If you can't, you will need to make a decision about fit versus comfortable. Remember learning about "cause and affect"? This often applies to fit. Once you are happy with the changes, take off the garment and see what needs to be done. Since these straps are curved, you may have to re-cut them. The changes need to be transferred to the pattern piece(s).
Re: Straps dont fit in back - redraft pattern? (posted on 2/9/18 12:53 PM ET)
The curved part of the strap may be cut a bit on the bias. This means you have to be extra careful not to pull on them when you're sewing them as this stretches them out.

I think you got some pattern pieces flipped around the wrong way and attached to each other wrong.

And I think those are the front armhole bands, that happened to. I think you sewed them to the front armhole openings with the "supposed" free and should be finished off edges of them to the armholes in the bodice by mistake. So now you got the parts of them that should have been attached to the armhole half circles of the front bodice, being the outer finished edges on your scoop back instead. That is the only way, I think they could flip out in that manner, all that very much probably. As would have nothing to do with how someone's personal back is shaped at all really.

Are you sure you don't have the shoulder seam and the side seam mixed up on those back pieces? If that's the case, you've got the right strap on the left arm and vise vera and the underarm curve shaping is coming at the wrong place. I think that might be easy to do.
