I want to make placemats using the wave stitch at the edges (I have a Babylock Evolution). Before I waste a lot of decorative thread, does anyone have any tips about how to turn a corner using the wave stitch? I suppose I could round the edges, but I'd rather not. Thanks for any and all ideas.

Sew off the edge, tie off your threads, then start again going down the next side. It's a very neat finish, and you won't even notice that the "sections" of the wave aren't perfectly even. I have done this several times to finish off needlework pieces that I don't want to frame, and I love the look.

Use a less expensive thread for practice, then when comfortable with the process, Try one more run with your decorative thread.

Stir, those are lovely! Did you do that over piping, or use a special thread?? Do tell, please!

Beautiful!
How did you get the wave stitch in the middle of your border since it is an edge stitch feature?

Thanks, guys!

That's just Wooly Nylon in the loopers. The needlework fabrics are aida cloth for the Christmas piece, and some kind of evenweave (lugana or jobelan) for the Hallowe'en one. Aida is very crisp and sturdy, and lugana has more drape. Both took the stitch nicely. The background of the Hallowe'en piece is a sandwich of quilting cottons + heavy craft interfacing, and it really serged beautifully with topstitch needles.

Sharon, it's a secret! No, I'm kidding--I serged the needlework first, then topstitched it to the background fabric, then fused it to the interfacing. More details and pictures here.

Like other people have said, the Wave stitch itself is not a reason to buy a Babylock, but once you have it, it's a fun option! I had had those pieces stitched but unfinished for years (note the 2003 on the bellpull--I bought my serger in 2015! ) and the Wave was just the perfect way to get them done and on display.

The wave stitch is a great finish on jacket edges and cuffs. I've used it to sew seams together for a decorative finish. Great feature!

Thanks! I will practice the tie off method. Just thinking now, though, about how these will hold up in the washer with the wave edge. Any thoughts?

Hi Sharon Rose. I just saw on the "Baby Lock Evolution, Ovation, Evolve and Triumph. Owners" Facebook page. You can do a Flatlock wave to get that stitch in the middle of your fabric. Go to www.babylock.com.au, in the left hand menu, click on "Sewing with Babylock", scroll down to techniques and click on "Wave Stitch Flat Lock" and you will find those instructions. I've tested it and it's beautiful and lies absolutely flat.
