For whatever reason my legs have always just refused to tan yet I find skirts the most comfortable thing to wear in the summer. There are innumerable self tanners on the market but invariably all that I've tried so far have led to an almost excruciating itch by the second day and if there's anything worse than white chicken legs, it's white chicken legs with huge scratches running up and down them

Is there anyone else out there with this problem who has found a workable product or solution? Someone on another forum mentioned leg makeup and I'm going to try that this summer for when I go out but most of the time I'm at home working outside in the gardens or such and getting generally mucked up so it's not something I'd use everyday. Any suggestions?

I have had the same problem - itching to all that I have tried. I have my fingers crossed that someone has an idea besides leg makeup....I don't want it on my clothes.

I too gave up on tanners. I have learned to like my skin “as is” (blotchy white, unfortunately). But there is no itching and no color transfer to clothing or furniture. When I know for certain that I will be in the sun all day, long pants to prevent a burn.

I'm coming down on this side, too. Enjoy your fair skin, and protect it.

A couple of years ago I went through an awful, year-long saga of eczema and full body Itch (brought on by thyroid changes). I discovered that Itch is my Kryptonite!! I can get used to pretty much any pain or discomfort, but this is the thing that threw me right over the edge, with constant calls to my doctor and pleas for help. I spent a whole summer with raw hands and unbearably itchy rashes all over my legs and arms. Since then, I'm more sensitive than ever to the sun: Any sunlight immediately turns my bare skin to rash. So it's 3/4 sleeves, capris, and sunscreen sunscreen sunscreen (but mineral sunscreen--which only enhances my fairness, snork--b/c I have also developed a sensitivity to chemical sunscreens which gets worse in the sun! *smacks head*).

All of that to say, learn to love your fair skin, because it is so much better than the alternative.

If you're a Costco member, they have MD Solar Sciences SPF 48 for $19 normally, but it will be on sale for $15 next month. It's the only physical only sunscreen I haven't absolutely hated. It feels like Smashbox primer, so silicone-y and velvety feeling. If you're pale, it doesn't have a white cast unless you're sweaty. The ingredients and percentages look like they're the same on the SPF 48 as they are on the $40 SPF 50.

Laura Geller makes a bronzing powder for the body. It is applied with a puff, and you buff it on just like you would face makeup.

I have and do use it in the summer but only if I’m not wearing light coloured clothing because I’m afraid it will rub off (although it doesn’t get on my sheets). It stays on until you scrub it off in the shower.

I use her powdered face foundation and it does not cause a rosacea flare up or bother my sensitive skin.

This link is from QVC but I buy it at Ulta. Laura Geller Body Bronzer

Maybe worth a look?

I like Tanceuticals --link here. Check their website also -- and see if a coupon is available on retail me not.

Not a lot of ingredients that I dislike. Fragrance is tolerable. I am a fair skinned red head. Even the dark formula gives me a light normal looking tan -- not orange -- enough that I can wear a dress or shorts in the summer without embarrassment. The tan covers varicose veins too.

Red hair, fair freckled skin, cannot tan.

I just spent 18 days rooming with a lovely young Japanese woman. She works incredibly hard to stay pale, yet pale people want to be dark. I do not understand why it is so hard to accept ourselves as we are.

Yes, having said the above, I do colour my hair and wear a powdered foundation, to smooth out my complexion, but I do not try to change the colour of my skin. I do not try to fill in the gaps around my freckles, or fade them away.

My dad has paler skin than me and far fewer freckles. When we were in Mexico a couple years ago, people at the resort, were making nasty comments on her pale skin. Why? What is wrong with pale?

I hate having to wear sunscreen and try my best to avoid the hottest part of the day, or stay in the shade during it.
