Bianca Andreescu upsets Serena Williams (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)
Posted on: 9/8/19 11:00 PM ET
I meant to post Saturday.
About me: Tennis was a sport I grew up with. My sister played competitively in the Mid-Atlantic States until my father’s death. She went on to play in college. I love to watch tennis, even if I don’t care who wins. It’s about the play, the shots taken, the strategy....
America has Coco Gauf and she is a 15 yr old phenom. No question about it. The young are very young. They have remarkably strong games. Some are mentally tough beyond their years. In that category, Canadian Bianca Andreescu, age 19. Her poise under pressure including deafening cheering for Serena was beyond her years. She played steady, she played strong, she played smart against a true champion.
The young are coming along to challenge the reigning champions...Federer, Djokovic, Nadal, Williams...they have had their time in the sun and now they are being challenged by a remarkable group of young tennis players.
So, hats off to Canada for its rising star. She was a delight to watch...determined, focused and so very smart.

I agree Eleanor. It is refreshing to see the next line up of greats as the old guard moves over. ( Daniil Medvedev almost took it from Rafa on Sunday. I was mesmerized.) "She the North" was incredible. Focused, calm, SMART! What I like is the no drama play. Other than Daniil's temper tantrum which he quickly deleted from his repertoire and apologized for he also played focused with no drama. Can do without the screaming and hysterics...just play tennis, which is what I am seeing. Coco is also so wonderful to watch. This is a good time in tennis. Thank you Roger and Rafa and Serena...but it is time to pass the baton. Roger in particular left a footprint of elegant class which is where I hope the new generation is going to follow...it appears so with Bianca's performance as well as Daniils "adjusted" performance.
Bravo
Thanks for your post

Thanks for the congratulations! I rarely follow sports, but I did see this and am very impressed. Now you've got me interested in watching her play.

Forgive my tardiness to this party!!
Thank you Eleanor for your kind and thoughtful words!! I don't know much about tennis but I am also amazed by Bianca's grace and poise, especially for her age. As a Canadian I am thrilled with her success of course.
While Bianca is a very competitive player, she also has a huge heart. I could not believe that when Serena Williams had to forfeit the first game to Bianca because of injury, Bianca hugged Serena and offered her comfort. Serena showed considerable grace as well. It was such a touching moment. (Now if only they could show that much grace in hockey... LOL... While I make fun, it really does sickens me to see elite players purposely targeted with the intention to hurt them just to increase the teams chance of winning. What exactly does one win when one hurts the players on the team to win? Ugh... so ugly)
Young people like Bianca give me hope for our future. She is such a powerful role model for people in her age generation. She also inspires me, at my age, to do better as well. That too me is a true sign of a champion...
