I had insomnia last night, so I went to SoundCloud to listen to psalter psalms. There's one person on there who has compiled a huge collection of these, by many different choirs and artists and churches. I noticed I had "liked" a few items, which I could listen to like a playlist. So, I hunted for more to add to this list. I usually clicked just long enough to hear whether it would qualify as a favourite, then I hit "like" for the ones I wanted to be added to the "liked" list. After a while I started wondering, hey, how many items are in this person's playlist? It kept loading more and more and more, and I was getting pretty tired. Ha ha, suddenly it was 1 a.m. I decided I would stop for the night. Today I decided to continue adding items. Then a message popped up, warning me that I had "liked" a LOT of songs in the past 48 hours, and I would be blocked if I did it again. What on earth...? Reading the community comments, pretty much everyone gets this and is annoyed by it. Most people are just doing what I was doing, making a playlist to come back to later. Some have been blocked more than once for doing this. I decided to just steer clear of SoundCloud for a while, much as I like this person's collection of music.

Just now I read that the reason they do this is that they think it's being done by bots. The message didn't say this -- it said something to the effect that I shouldn't be promoting myself (?) and that this was a community (apparently I was somehow being unfair to the others?), etc. etc. ...I honestly have no idea what they were talking about. I've been known to do a similar thing on Pinterest -- saving various images one after the other if I get on a roll. Ha... I may have just found the one thing I do too quickly.

Anyway, have any of you had a similar experience on SoundCloud?

OK, I guess it was just me. But it's still odd to get told not to "like" things that are there in public view, for public use.

I don't have Soundcloud, but I read your post. At first I assumed it had something to do with royalties - perhaps having to pay more in royalties for songs you 'liked' but couldn't possibly have listened through. But that wasn't the case.

They claim they're trying to prevent people from gaming the ratings and artificially boosting popularity of their favored artists. That explanation for the blocking doesn't make that much sense to me. Shouldn't a computer algorithm be smart enough by this point in time to figure out what's fraud and what's normal activity? Occasional bursts of likes (and dislikes?) seems normal to me. Isn't that how most of use listen to music and find new music?

I imagine it's because you were doing rapid fire liking. They want you to actually listen to stuff while you're at it. I think people are more inclined to listen to at least a good part of a song before they like it and wander on to the next. You must have exceeded the *likes per minute/hour* threshold.

Pinterest used to get a bit finicky with people who were pinning like mad people. They want the content looked at too, especially all the paid for *sponsored* pins they throw at us.

PS: First I had to look up what Psalter Psalms were. OK, not books.

Then I had to look up Soundcloud*. Got my allotment of Rap for the afternoon. Now I think I'll chill. Maybe a little EMO later, or sad songs for Autumn.

* I've heard of Soundcloud before, just not gone there.

Ha ha... like I said, I may have discovered the only thing I do too quickly.

I was doing the equivalent of bookmarking them, to listen to more fully later. It was also really the only way to check out what this person has in his collection/playlist. I think he must have a thousand or more items in this category, because it kept loading and loading. I won't likely have a moment when I can listen all the way through to everything in it.

Well, the psalters are books... of psalms. Like a hymnbook. In Scotland particularly, many churches sing from the psalters even today. They're typically sung to tunes that are used for other hymns as well. My favourite ones (this is how much of a geek I am, and I suppose how deep my Celtic roots go) are the Scottish ones from the 1500's and 1600's. This person on SoundCloud has posted several (dozens of?) recordings of this type of song.

In that case, they don't pay much attention to what is actually on their site, then, because the things I was liking/bookmarking were done by a variety of artists, but posted by someone I'm following. The other funny thing about this is that... well, these are basically hymns. I don't think they exactly threaten to dominate the internet soundwaves and bump some currently popular music star from top of the ratings.
