NY Times article on indigenous village designs, and the western designers "borrowing" them (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)

The relatively new style Tenango de Doria embroideries developed in the 1960s among people who spoke Otomi, developed to be a more salable form of traditional Otomi embroidery when there was a major crop failure. It's now showing up all over the world, on "designer" coffee mugs, napkins, clothing...

Benneton, Hererra and Nestle are among those who have accused of cultural appropriation. Nestle won a copyright infringement case invalidating the original artist's copyright.

Beautiful beautiful work.
Sadly, if Nestle hadn’t won, they would probably have gone full Dickensian (shades of Jarndyce)...just ask Disney about AA Milne...Milne’s heirs....the problem with going against these big corporations is that they can litigate for generations. Their immortality confers an unfair advantage.

Sure makes me grateful for the fair trade artisan stores like Ten Thousand Villages, where the artisans get a viable deal.

Outrageous.
That really is appropriation.I was in New York City this year on the weekend of a Brazilian festival and saw some of this work on various stalls.
