I'm working on a dress for my daughter's 8th grade graduation. It's a lined, fitted bodice with a full circle skirt. Any suggestions for alterations? Note that in this photo I have pinned a little out of the side seams to try to make the bodice look less boxy.

The darts look too long, and need to be backed off the bust some. There's something odd going on with grainlines, and the front neckline is pulled to the left, as is the right armscye, making that little bulge.

I think the first things I would do would be to shorten the side dart and the underbust dart, then draw vertical and horizontal grainlines and try to get the grainlines straight on her body.

Does she have another bodice pattern that is better fitting? I'm wondering if something with an armscye princess might not be more flattering, though I think you can make this one work, but you might wind up recutting the bodice in a smaller size.

Kayl - We think alike! I decided to rework the bodice with princess seams. I also added a sweetheart neckline to make it fancier.

I raised the skirt to her natural waist, which, much like her mama's, is pretty high up. Thoughts now? Basically the goal here is to make her *feel* like the character Tahani from The Good Place while being appropriate for an 8th grader. :)

Ooh! Much better! What does she say? I would probably enlarge the armscye a smidge, and maybe open the neckline a smidge, but not much.

Is your machine having a ply puckering problem?

Kayl - Nah, this is just a muslin fitting, so I just basted all the pieces together. That's why it looks so puckery.

She is delighted!
