Sweater Patterns (Moderated by Sharon1952)

Has anyone used knitting schematics as a sweater pattern?
I have some stretchy sweater knit and need to replace a favorite sweater. I was contemplating using a knitting schematic from a knitting magazine as a pattern, but wondered if that would work.
I don't care for the traditional Kwik Sew or Loes Hines pattern recco's for sweaters, I'd like this top to look like a sweater (if that makes sense).

Can you use your sweater as your pattern? The only thing is that if your existing top has ribbing that's going to be difficult to replicate on your sewn version. You could using the ribbing found in Hancock's or elsewhere possibly. I also wonder if you could knit the ribbing from complimentary yarn and crochet that onto the knit fabric. Has anyone tried that?
FWIW, the latest Crochet guild magazine has a story about using one of the big 4 skirt patterns as a schematic for a crocheted skirt. It was quite interesting with lots of pictures demonstrating every step along the way. The outcome is way cool.
