Firstly, I ought to state that I hate my coverstitch machine. I allow that I have little patience with *this* particular ‘chine. But it’s the one I have at the moment and I don’t want to be defeated by this project.
The project in question is with performance fabric and I have matching Eloflex thread. I cannot get the tension adjusted to prevent broken thread while stitching. I’ve used all my swear words and that didn’t help, so here I am.
I have thread nets on all spools of thread.
I have those thingies atop of each spool to deflect the thread feeding off the spool to prevent snags on the spool edge.
I have ended up setting tension to zero.
I have stitched at moderate speed, and at very slow speed.
Is Eloflex not recommended in coverstitch machines? Or is it recommended in only some of the thread paths? Your assistance, please.

Take a bit of your thread and thread the same size needle as you have your machine. Is it filling more than about 40-50% the width of the eye of the needle? If so, that's where I think the problem lies.

I have some Eloflex thread and am not really a fan.
In my coverstitch, I use regular poly thread in the needles and MaxiLock stretch or woolly nylon in the loopers ONLY. Are you using the Eloflex in the needles or the looper?

LifeofJanine, I threaded all three needles and the looper with the eloflex. The center needle is shredding, and the looper thread seems awfully tight. I guess this eloflex is not worth it; it’s a good idea but that’s it. I’ve wasted three hours trying all sorts of combinations, including changing needles.
Kayl, I have checked the available needle eye space once threaded, and it seems to be in line with your suggestion, thank you.

I would save the Eloflex for the loopers only. Maybe try that - put regular thread in the needles and leave the Eloflex in the bottom looper only.
What machine do you have?

I have a Janome 1000dcx, which I purchased, new, in 2011. No lessons, and I have regretted this purchase ever since. It is the rare stitching occasion that it works without swear words from me.

Another vote for stretch thread only in looper and good quality thread in the needles.

Because the coverstitch itself is a stretchable stitch [which makes it preferable to a stitched hem on a knit garment], I don't see any need for the Eloflex. I'd re-thread with regular cones of serger thread and see what difference that makes. Good luck. My BLCS is a powerhorse but I've never tried the Eloflex in it.

I don't think the Eloflex thread is needed in a coverstitch machine.
That being said, whenever I use specialty threads (metallics, etc.) in my serger or coverstitch machines, I only use them in the loopers and use regular serger thread in the needles.

I agree with the others that Eloflex isn't needed in a cover stitch machine. It was created specifically to use on sewing machines to allow for stretch in seams sewn on knits. As Moose Sky said, the coverstitch has stretch.
