I haven't sewn for little kids for a long time. I'm making a jumper for a 5 year old and her chest is 23.5". Should I make the finished garment size 27.5, 28.5, or 29.5". It is a denim jumper and she will be wearing a long T under it. How much ease do I need. Thanks.

I would make the smallest size you mentioned with a completed masurement of 27.5" if it is light weight denim. I might go up to the next size only if the denim is heavier although I would use light weight denim for a child's jumper. The 5-year- old you mentioned is between a size 4 and size 5 in the big 4. if she measures 23.5" Based on my expereince, the big 4 typically include plenty of ease for their children's garments. Here is a typical big 4 jumper pattern. Well, actually it is a pinafore, but I think with the blouse underneath finished measurements would be comparable. The size 5 pattern has a completed chest measurement of 27.5". So since the child you are sewing for is actually slightly smaller than the size 5 measurements to start with, I would stick with the smallest size you mentioned.

Patty,
Thats what I'll do then. I guess I figured better a tiny bit big than too small. I think she is a little small for her age. I don't have access to her so it makes it hard- but glad I at least have some measurements to go by.
Thanks for the quick response as I hope to make it tonight.

The jumper I am making for my daughter has 4" of ease in the pattern and it looks like it is going to fit really well. I agree with Patty!
